GCSE maths resit: find your gaps before the exam finds them
Around 180,000 people resit GCSE maths every year, and most prepare by doing the same revision that didn't work the first time, harder. The resit you pass is the one where you find the gaps first.

Why the first attempt failed (it’s rarely the exam year)
A GCSE maths paper looks like it tests two years of course content. It actually tests about eight years of accumulated structure, because every exam-year topic stands on earlier ones. Solving equations assumes fractions behave for you. Ratio questions assume proportional reasoning that was supposed to arrive in year 8. When a paper goes wrong, it is usually one of these lower floors giving way, and the cruelty of it is that revision guides only cover the top floor. You can revise the syllabus diligently and still fail, because the thing that is broken is not on the syllabus you were given.
This is why “do more past papers” is half-advice. Past papers tell you that you drop marks on algebra; they cannot tell you that the reason is a specific fraction skill from years earlier. Practice measures the damage. It does not locate the leak.
The gap-first resit plan
Flip the order. Before opening a revision guide: measure. Find which concepts, across the whole tower and not just the exam year, are actually missing. Then repair them in prerequisite order, lowest first, because a repaired foundation makes everything above it dramatically faster to fix. Only then do past papers earn their keep, as a check that the repairs hold under exam conditions. And because a resit runway is months long, the repairs need scheduled review to still be there in exam week, not just the week you fixed them.
If it’s been years, not months
