Picture a sixteen-year-old at the kitchen table. Twenty quadratics for tomorrow. Phone out, camera over question one, and the worked solution is on screen before the kettle has boiled. Copy the steps, next question. The whole sheet takes ten minutes, the handwriting is neat, the answers are all correct, and the homework is marked as done. Nothing about this looks like a problem. The parent sees a teenager who finishes their maths without a fuss; the teacher sees a completed book.

Then the mock exam. Same kind of quadratic, no phone, and the page stays blank. Not because the student is lazy or careless, but because in the entire term they never once produced a method from a standing start. They watched Photomath do it, twenty times a night, and watching turned out to be a different activity from doing. The mark comes back, everyone is baffled, and the search for an alternative begins with the wrong question: which app explains it better? The better question is why an app that always explained it correctly left so little behind.

If you are the parent in that scene, notice how invisible the gap was. Every signal you had, the finished sheet, the ticks, the lack of complaints, was a signal about the homework, not the student. The only honest measurement is the one the camera cannot take: cover the solution, hand over a fresh problem of the same type, and see what comes out. If the answer is a confident method, Photomath is being used well. If the answer is a long silence, the term’s homework has been done by the app and the exam will say so.

What Photomath is genuinely superb at

None of this is a complaint about the tool. Photomath, owned by Google since 2023, is in our view the most polished camera solver there is. Point it at a printed or handwritten problem and it returns a correct, worked solution in seconds; the recognition is reliable, the steps are laid out the way a teacher would lay them out, and the free tier covers what most people need. For a parent trying to decode a teenager’s homework, for a student who has finished a problem and wants to know whether the answer is right, for anyone stuck on a single line at eleven at night, it is exactly the right tool.

A solver is the right tool when you are stuck on one step of something you mostly know: you have set the problem up, you can see where it is going, and one manipulation is refusing to come. Scanning at that moment costs you nothing, because the thinking has already happened. The danger is the other case, where the scan replaces the thinking rather than completing it, and nothing in the app can tell the two apart.

Seeing Photomath’s steps is not the same as producing them

Here is the mechanism behind the blank page. When you read a worked solution, each line looks obvious, because each line is obvious once it is in front of you. That feeling of obviousness is recognition, and recognition is cheap: you would recognise the steps of a piece of music you could not play. An exam does not ask you to recognise a method. It asks you to retrieve it, unprompted, and produce it line by line with nothing to check against. Those are different skills, and the second one only grows when you practise it.

The research on this is not subtle. Testing yourself on something, struggling to pull it out of memory and then checking, leaves far more behind than re-reading it, even when the re-reading feels more comfortable and the testing feels worse. A camera solver removes that effort on every single problem, which is why it can be used every night and still leave the exam untouched.

There is a second gap it cannot see. When a quadratic is hard for a particular student, the reason is rarely the quadratic. It is the negative-number rule from two years ago, or the fraction that should have been simplified first, or an expansion that always drops a term. Photomath answers the question you photographed. It has no way of knowing why that question was difficult for you, so the prerequisite that is actually missing stays missing, and shows up again in the next topic wearing a different costume.

The opposite direction to Photomath: find the gap, then answer for yourself

Consiliae starts where a solver stops. Instead of taking the problem you already have and removing it, it takes you and works out what is missing. A short adaptive placement scan, at most 25 questions with no timer, finds your actual frontier, and a prerequisite map you can see traces tonight’s struggle with quadratics back to the concept that is really causing it, whether that is two topics back or two years back. Is using Photomath cheating?
That depends on what the homework is for. If the point of the homework is a completed sheet, Photomath completes it. If the point is that you can do this kind of problem next month without a phone, then scanning first and copying the steps defeats the purpose, whether or not anyone calls it cheating. A fair test: attempt the problem yourself first, then scan to check. Used in that order, it is a checker. Used the other way round, it is doing your practice for you.
Does Photomath actually teach you maths?
It shows you a correct method for the specific problem you photographed, clearly and quickly, and for some students that is enough to unstick a single moment. What it does not do is find out why that problem was hard for you, make you produce the method yourself, or bring the topic back later to check it stuck. Those three things are where most of the learning happens, so on its own Photomath tends to teach recognition rather than ability.
Is Photomath Plus worth paying for?
At the time of writing Photomath Plus is listed at $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year, and adds animated tutorials, textbook solutions, deeper explanations and hints on top of the free solver. If you already use the camera as a checker after your own attempt, the extra explanations can be worth it. If the problem is that homework gets done and exams still go badly, more detailed solutions will not fix that, because the missing ingredient is you answering questions, not you reading better answers.
How accurate is Photomath?
For clearly printed problems in the topics it supports, arithmetic through algebra, trigonometry and standard calculus, it is generally reliable, and the step-by-step is usually the method a teacher would use. It reads handwriting too, but reviewers consistently report that accuracy drops with untidy writing, and Google's own help centre says the first thing to check when a solution looks wrong is whether the problem was scanned correctly. Treat the steps as a check on your own working rather than as a source of truth you never question.
Can Photomath solve word problems?
Up to a point. Google's site says the app can scan word problems, and reviewers find it manages clearly worded ones, but its strength is recognising and solving the written expression, not translating a paragraph of context into an equation. That translation step is usually the part students struggle with most, and it is precisely the step a solver skips when it works and cannot help with when it does not.
