Reading is billed separately, so a child doing both is close to double. Over a year that is somewhere between $1,700 and $2,400 for maths alone, before fees, and the programme is not designed as a term of catch-up. Most students stay two to four years, and many stay longer.

What that money buys is specific. Two centre visits a week, in person or virtual, where the child works through sheets and an instructor marks them and sets the next batch. A packet of worksheets for the other five days, to be done at home on paper or on a tablet, about thirty minutes per subject, with a parent supervising. A level system that starts at counting and ends at calculus, one small step at a time, with repetition of the same skill until it is fast and error-free. The instructor relationship, and the expectation of turning up on Tuesday, is the part that no worksheet on its own provides.

The question that arrives, usually a few years in, is not whether any of that is worthless. It is whether the child is still learning maths or has mostly learned to do Kumon worksheets: fast, accurate, and with no idea why any of it works. What Kumon genuinely does well, and the child who should stay

None of the above is an argument that Kumon is a scam. Two of its founding ideas are simply correct. A little maths every day beats a lot of maths once a week, and fluency in the basics makes everything built on them easier. The worksheets deliver both. Children who complete a few years of Kumon are, almost without exception, quicker and more accurate at arithmetic than their classmates, and that speed is a real asset in every later maths lesson, because working memory is not being spent on seven times eight.

It also teaches something the worksheets never mention: independence. The child learns to sit down, start without being told, and finish. The instructor at the centre is an adult outside the family who expects the work done, and for many children that expectation is the whole engine. Parents whose children thrive under that structure defend the programme fiercely, and they are right to.

So the child who should stay is easy to describe. A young child, roughly five to eleven, still building arithmetic fluency, who responds to the centre ritual and the instructor, in a family where the monthly fee genuinely fits. For that child, Kumon is doing the job it was designed for, and an app is not a substitute for an adult who knows their name.

Now the other learner, the one whose parent, or who herself, is usually the person reading this page. She is sixteen. She started Kumon at eight and stayed six years. She can do long division in her head and knows her tables cold. Her Kumon levels say she covered algebra. And she is stuck, properly stuck, in the first year of A-level maths, on exactly the topics the levels claim she finished: rearranging formulae, solving equations with confidence rather than by pattern, negative numbers inside expressions, and what a graph has to do with the rule behind it.

Her parent is baffled, because the reports were always good and the money was always paid. The explanation is not that Kumon lied. It is that speed drills build speed, and speed was measured, so speed was what she got. Nobody ever asked her why you can subtract the same thing from both sides of an equation, or what a variable is for, or what a straight line on a graph has to do with the rule that made it. The sheets modelled the moves, she copied the moves, she got fast at the moves. When the school changed the moves, there was nothing underneath.

This is the point where continuing to pay for Kumon stops making sense. More repetition cannot fix a gap that repetition created, and a sixteen-year-old no longer needs a centre to make her sit down. What she needs is the thing the worksheets skipped: explanation, aimed precisely at the handful of ideas she never actually understood, without sending her back to the start of a level she can already do in her sleep.
